What We Do - Performance Optimization

What We Do > Performance Optimization
Measurement and Verification
C.E.S. Engineering is an industry leader in building systems sub-metering, data collection, reporting and analysis. We provide comprehensive measurement and verification services in line with internationally recognized M&V guidelines and protocols and in compliance with LEED Measurement & Verification (M&V) credit requirements.

Our M&V services portfolio projects includes health care facilities, research laboratories, post secondary, secondary and primary schools, institutional buildings.

We are experts in providing M&V services in line with IPMVP:
  • Option B (Retrofit Isolation) from the 2006 International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol (IPMVP) Volume I - Concepts and Options for Determining Energy and Water Savings
  • Option C (Whole Building) from the 2006 International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol (IPMVP) Volume I, concept and options for determining energy and water savings
  • Option D from the 2006 International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol (IPMVP) Volume III, concept and options for determining energy savings in new construction and with LEED EA Credit 5, Measurement and Verification requirements.
Building on the success of M&V analysis and reporting during the first year of operations, we have extended our services into ongoing M&V programs for a number of clients in the post-secondary, institutional and provide sector.

Monitoring Based Commissioning (MBCx) and Ongoing Commissioning
Our combination of 20 years of experience in commissioning along with over a decade of experience in M&V to provide Monitoring Based Commissioning services.

Options include leveraging our in-house Energy Management Information System (EMIS) software or working with a client’s existing BAS or other measurement data collection as the basis for MBCx analysis and reporting. In either option, our approach to MBCx focuses on coaching and consultation with energy managers, facility managers, O&M personnel, and control technicians to ensure that reports are understood by all parties, and concrete actionable implementation plans are created and followed through on.

Energy Management Information Systems (EMIS)
EcoCEO (Continuous Energy Optimizer) developed by our sister company EcoOpera Systems Inc., is a comprehensive Energy Management Information System (EMIS) for supporting and streamlining Energy Monitoring, Targeting and Reporting (MT&R), Measurement and Verification (M&V), Operations and Maintenance (O&M), Commissioning (Cx) and Recommissioning (RCx) and custom processes.

Offered as a web-based Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) or as a turn-key stand-alone system, EcoCEO provides unlimited scalability from stand-alone projects to worldwide building portfolios.

Fault Detection and Diagnostics (FDD)
Utilizing the EcoCEO™ fault detection platform we are able to analyze collected BAS and metering data based on pre-programmed fault detection algorithms to identify, inventory, and report on building faults in real-time.

EcoCEO™ identifies faults through the following ways:
  1. Comparison of equipment command vs. feedback
  2. Execution of customizable rule-based algorithms based on metered data
  3. Comparison of metered values and its ability to adequately maintain set-points
  4. Monitoring of status cycling or oscillations
  5. Measurement point deviation from typical acceptable ranges
  6. Comparison between Optimized Performance Models
EcoCEO™ offers a unique solution to fault detection beyond standard methods (items 1 – 5) through the use of Optimized Performance Models. These models are customized algorithms developed by our performance engineers to determine optimal energy use given a particular system or equipment configuration. In general, theoretical performance models are developed for all critical building systems such as central plants and air handling units where optimized controls and reset schedules can offer substantial savings opportunities. These models offer the opportunity to capture more complex faults by having engineering knowledge programmed into the software.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
EcoCEO™ also offers standardized Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for a commercial building energy use and operational efficiency.

Under building KPIs, we assume simple numeric metrics of energy use or observed quantitative measurements that help in understanding building performances. KPI reports are a tracking method that helps in better understanding the performance changes, causes of changes, and consequences of the performance outcomes.

Based on the level of details we group KPIs in 3 levels: (1) whole building, (2) building systems, and (3) specific equipment.
